The ‘Plant epidemiology and vector transmission’ team leads researches on mechanisms of the spread of plant diseases transmitted by aerial vectors. Our works are focused on three topics: i) the analysis of the biological and molecular diversity of pathogen populations and their vectors, ii) the study of adaptive and evolutionary processes involved in specific interactions between pathogens, vectors and hosts (wild and cultivated) and iii) the development of models to explain and/or simulate the spatio-temporal dynamics of the pathosystems.

To carry out our research actions, we address complementary questions on three phytopathogenic agents: two viruses, Plum pox virus (PPV, Potyvirus) and Wheat dwarf virus (WDV, Mastrevirus), which are responsible respectively of Sharka on Prunus and of ‘wheat dwarf’ on cereals, and a phytoplasma, ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum’, which is the causal agent of European stone fruit yellows. Studies on these phytopathogens allow to cover a wide range of variations in biological parameters involved in the epidemiology of diseases transmitted by aerial vectors: host range (perennial vs. annual), transmission dynamics (persistent vs. non-persistent) and type of vector (aphids vs. psyllids vs. leafhoppers).

In this way, our approach consists in identifying major factors involved in the dynamics of these pathosystems with different methods and taking into account the sources of inoculum, the frequency and distances of spread, and the adaptation of pathogens populations to a given agronomic context. Through this scientific approach, our ambition is to merge researches in evolutionary biology, molecular epidemiology and modelling carried out at the plant scale (the level at which the biological properties of the pathogens are characterised) with those led on wider scales (from the plot to the region scale, level of understanding of the dynamics of epidemics expansion due to vectors and human activities).
